How is therapeutic exercise different than googling exercises?

Physical therapists are trained on systematic, planned performance of physical movements, postures or activities intended to provide you with the means to:

  • Remediate or prevent injuries and pain.
  • Improve, restore, or enhance activities & participation in your goals.
  • Prevent or reduce health-related risk factors
  • Improve and optimize overall health and well-being
  • Individualize and tailor exercises to you!

When we see a health condition, we don’t just consider the condition – we consider the person with the health condition.

  1. We respect the tissue healing process.
It is important to note that a condition may be acute (just happened), or it is chronic (have had the injury for a longer period). Exercises must be tailored around the patient condition & how long the injury has been occurring for. From here we can determine your goals & prescribe exercises surrounding those goals.
  2. We keep in mind important benchmark tasks that are essential to daily living.
There are many benchmark tasks that individuals experience on a day-to-day basis. This includes – lifting, stairs, walking, squatting, and sitting. To ensure that you can participate in those benchmark tasks, our exercises are tailored to be functional and effective so you can continue to live independently with joint and muscle health longevity.
  3. We evaluate current muscle performance including strength, endurance, power & neuromuscular education.
Sometimes the issue isn’t that your muscle isn’t strong enough or doesn’t have enough power. Instead, the concern may be movement coordination impairments, a proprioception problem, or a balance concern. Our Doctor’s of Physical Therapy are able to screen for this and develop a plan for you based on the weaknesses and impairments we determine.
