Here’s something that might be surprising to you – not all physical therapists are created equal! Even within the same clinic, different therapists may have different approaches to treating patients. So, how do you know you’re working with the right PT for you? Here are some things to consider:
- You feel listened to – Does your PT listen to you? Like really listen? Do they take the time to get to know you, understand your goals for physical therapy, and treat you like a person, as opposed to a patient? Building trust and rapport is an essential part of a successful doctor-patient relationship, so don’t overlook this one!
- You are making progress- This is the whole reason you’re going to PT! Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for patients to continue working with their therapists for multiple weeks without seeing any progress. Is your PT giving you work to do on your own? Are they modifying your treatments each session based on your progress, or lack thereof? If not, do you feel comfortable talking to them about it? (see point #1)
- You have a plan – As much as we love our patients, the goal of PT isn’t to keep you coming back forever. Have you talked to your therapist about how to measure the success of your treatment, what your goals are and a potential timeline to achieve them? It’s important that you are both aligned in your expectations and what you want to get out of your sessions together.
