Peroneal Tendonitis: Physical Therapy

A condition known as peroneal tendinopathy or peroneal tendonitis is a condition where the pain in our outer ankle could indicate a problem called peroneal tendinopathy.

Anatomy of Peroneal Tendons

These are located on the outside of the leg, near the ankle. They are composed of three peroneal muscles: peroneus longus (services), and Tertius (tertius).

These tendons come from the peroneal muscle on your outer leg.

Peroneal tendonitis: Signs and symptoms

While these symptoms might vary from person to person, they are the most prevalent.

  • Pain in the lateral ankle
  • Walking or running can cause pain
  • Sideways movement of your ankle can cause pain   
  • You feel swelling at your lateral foot bone
  • Also, redness can be seen at the outside of your ankle

Peroneal tendonitis can be a form overuse injury or repeated strain. This means it is not traumatized. Contact your physical therapist immediately if you have lateral ankle irritation.

Peroneal Tendonitis – PT

Your physical therapist will complete your evaluation and start your treatment. The treatment goals for peroneal tendonitis include decreasing pain, improving range and motion, and improving function such as walking or running.

Peroneal tendonitis can be treated by a physical therapist using many different methods.

Exercise

The main component of treating peroneal tendonitis is exercise. The goal of exercise is to improve your range and flexibility, strength, balance, strength, and coordination. Massage

Hand-on manual therapy, which is used to treat soft tissue injuries, can also be used. This can be used before or after stretching and exercise to increase circulation.

Heat and Ice

Physical therapists may also use heat or Ice to treat tendonitis inflammation. They also use it to speed up healing and improve blood circulation.

Physical therapists can also use many other modalities like ultrasound and electro stimulation therapy. Remember that active exercises can improve your condition more than passive modes so ensure your treatment plan includes more active modalities.
