Setting quadriceps exercises

To regain normal lower extremity function and range, it is crucial to align your quads properly after knee microfracture. It is also an important step in quad strength. Here are the steps.

  • With your knee straight, lie on your back.
  • Place a small, folded towel underneath your knee
  • You can now press your knees into the towel. Now, pull your quad muscle up to your thigh.
  • For 5 seconds, hold this contraction.
  • Now let go of all tension.
  • Do this 15 times.
  • This can be repeated several times per day to improve quad function and contraction

Short arc quadriceps

These are an additional set of exercises to help strengthen quads after microfracture.

  • With your operative leg straight, lie on your back.
  • You can place any type of ball like a soccer ball or volleyball under your operative leg.
  • As you keep the ball under the knee, lift your heel off to the ground and straighten your legs.
  • You’ll feel your quad muscles contract.
  • Keep this motion for three seconds and then lower your leg slowly.
  • Repeat this 15-20 times

Standing Weight Shifts

Your physician may restrict your ability to put any weight on your leg for the first few days. After that, you will be more comfortable walking with the aid of crutches and walkers. After you are permitted to put weight on the operative leg, your physical therapy may make gentle weight shifts.

This is done by standing straight up on your crutches with both feet on the ground. Now, rhythmically shift you weight from one side to the other.

Balance and Proprioception exercises

You will be amazed at how much 40% of your walking can be done on one foot.

For example, when climbing stairs, one foot must be on the ground and the other must swing in the air. This is why it is important to maintain a good balance. Some of these exercises can help maintain balance.

  • Single leg stance on balance and on unsteady surfaces
  • Single leg stance, close and open eyes.
  • BOSU or BAPS board: Single leg stance

These exercises are an important part of your rehabilitation plan. These exercises simulate situations in which you might feel a bit unsteady. Your body will be ready for these unsteady conditions in real life.

Although you may find these exercises difficult, remember to stay safe and keep an object nearby that you can grab in case you fall.
