When collapsed forward over a device, the abdominal muscles are compressed and inactive, the back muscles can’t engage properly to support the spine, the diaphragm can’t work effectively for proper breathing, and the entire core stabilizing system becomes dysfunctional.
Core strength and stability are foundational for virtually all physical activities, from sports to simply maintaining good posture during school days. Children developing weak core patterns from excessive screen time may show reduced athletic performance, difficulty sitting upright through class periods, back pain during or after physical activities, and poor balance and coordination.

For computer or tablet use at a desk, position the screen at eye level so your child looks straight ahead rather than down. The top of the screen should be at or slightly below eye level. Ensure the chair supports the lower back and allows feet to rest flat on the floor or on a footrest. Position the keyboard and mouse so shoulders can stay relaxed and elbows bent at approximately 90 degrees. Encourage sitting all the way back in the chair rather than perching on the front edge.
For handheld device use, teach children to bring devices up toward eye level rather than dropping their head down. Use stands or props to elevate tablets and phones. Encourage frequent position changes rather than staying in one posture for extended periods. Set timers for regular breaks to stand, stretch, and move.
These modifications won’t eliminate all postural stress, but they significantly reduce the load on developing spines compared to typical device postures.

One of the most effective strategies for protecting your child’s spine is ensuring regular movement breaks during screen time. Prolonged static postures cause more problems than the posture itself. Implement a rule of movement breaks every 20 to 30 minutes during screen time. These breaks don’t need to be long, just 2 to 3 minutes of standing, stretching, or moving around. Even better, include specific exercises that counteract screen postures, such as shoulder blade squeezes that pull shoulders back, gentle neck stretches in all directions, chest stretches to open the front of the body, and standing and reaching overhead to extend the spine.
Making these breaks a consistent expectation rather than something children do only when they remember establishes healthy habits that can last a lifetime.
Strengthening Exercises for Children
Beyond setup and breaks, children who use devices regularly benefit from exercises that build strength in the muscles that counteract tech posture. These exercises can be incorporated into daily routines and made age-appropriate and even fun.
Shoulder blade squeezes involve sitting or standing tall and squeezing shoulder blades together as if trying to hold a pencil between them. Hold for 5 seconds and repeat 10 times. Wall angels mimic making snow angels against a wall, moving arms up and down while keeping back flat against the wall. This strengthens upper back muscles and stretches the chest. Chin tucks address forward head posture by gently tucking the chin back to create a double chin, holding briefly, and repeating. Superman poses with lying on the stomach and lifting arms and legs off the ground simultaneously strengthens back extensors.
Making these exercises part of a daily routine, perhaps tied to screen time allowances where children must complete their exercises to earn screen time, ensures consistency.
Limiting Overall Screen Time
While ergonomic strategies help, the most effective way to protect your child’s spine is limiting total screen time. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 1 to 2 hours of recreational screen time daily for school-age children, with less for younger children.
This is increasingly challenging in a world where screens are used for education, socialization, and entertainment. However, prioritizing non-screen activities provides multiple benefits beyond spinal health, including better sleep quality, improved social skills, increased physical activity, and better attention and focus.
Establishing clear screen time limits and alternatives, encouraging outdoor play and physical activities, creating screen-free zones and times like bedrooms and mealtimes, and modeling healthy screen habits yourself all help children develop balanced relationships with technology.

These include frequent complaints of neck, shoulder, or back pain, persistent headaches, particularly at the back of the head, visible postural changes like significantly rounded shoulders or forward head, difficulty sitting up straight even when trying, and reduced participation in physical activities due to discomfort.
These symptoms shouldn’t be dismissed as normal or something your child will outgrow. Early intervention addresses problems before they become severe or affect spinal development.
